SCGP maintains healthy growth with first half-year earnings of THB57,148M And with plan for progressive growth in the year’s second half

Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP announces that SCGP’s performance during the first half of 2021 yielded a total sales revenue of baht 57,148 million, an increase of 24% from the same period last year and a profit of baht 4,398 million, an increase of 21%. Meanwhile, its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, excluding dividends from partner companies but including profits or losses from currency exchange on loans) of baht 10,831 million is an increase of 23% from last year.
The increased revenue from sales was the result of rising demands for packaging products and increased exports in ASEAN of such products as consumer goods, food, and frozen food, as well as economic recoveries from the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Europe and China. While increased energy costs and shortages of freight containers exert pressure on performance, the Company continues to improve its cost management and operations to enhance competitiveness.

At the same time, the Company has been able to earn an increase in revenue through maintaining its leadership as an integrated packaging solutions provider in ASEAN and its planned expansion through merger and partnership (M&P) with Bien Hoa Packaging Joint Stock Company (SOVI) of Vietnam and investment in Go-Pak UK Limited to enable expansion in other regions. Past endeavors to increase capacity include increasing production of paper packaging in Indonesia as well as set up production of performance and polymer packaging products in Thailand.

“SCGP has been able to maintain steady growth. This is the result of our planning a growth strategy encompassing expansion of our current business operations and M&P both here and abroad. We expect that in 2021 we will invest no less than baht 20 billion to expand our customer base to cover multiple industries, and add diverse packaging portfolios as well as increase research and development of innovations, work processes and business models in order to come up with packaging solutions that respond to individual customer’s needs. We’ll also look at improving cost management on a continuous basis,” says Mr. Wichan.

On 27 July 2021, the Board of Directors of SCGP has approved a H1/2021 interim dividend payment of 0.25 Baht/Share (Baht 1,073 million), which is payable on August 25, 2021 (XD-date on August 9, 2021, and record date on August 10, 2021).

Mr. Wichan adds: “As for the industry outlook for the last half of the year we expect to receive positive impacts from the US and Europe’s economic recovery. Having said that, there remain uncertainties arising from the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the economy, especially in ASEAN.

However, for the latter half of the year, SCGP will try to sustain growth with projected sales for the entire year of no less than 100,000 million baht. The Company will operate according to its strategic plan with a project to boost production capacity, which is to increase production of paper foodservice packaging for an addition of 1,615 million pieces a year in Thailand and Vietnam, which is expected to begin commercial operation by the third quarter of this year. Moreover, the production capacity for paper packaging in the Philippines will be increased by 220,000 tons per year while production of flexible polymer packaging in Thailand is to be increased by 53 million square meters per year by the fourth quarter of the year.

“SCGP also has initiated M&P projects, the latest of which took place on July 23, 2021, when we acquired 70% of Duy Tan Plastics Manufacturing Corporation (Duy Tan), Vietnam’s leading producer of rigid plastic packaging products. In addition, we are in the process of closing deals in the third quarter of 2021, including the acquisition of 75% of PT Indonesia Dirtajaya Aneka Industri Box, PT Bahana Buana Box, and PT Rapipack Asritama (Intan Group), to expand our paper packaging operations in Indonesia. We have also acquired 85% of shares in Spain’s Deltalab, S.L. to enhance our potential to provide services and support the growth of our medical supplies and labware at the global level. SCGP will maintain strength by collaborating with our partners to achieve sustained growth along with special attention to environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns,” Mr. Wichan adds.

SCGP forms a partnership with Duy Tan in Vietnam To diversify packaging products and meet demands in ASEAN

SCGP is enlarging its investment in Vietnam, by entering into a merger and partnership deal, taking over 70% of Duy Tan, Vietnams leading producer of rigid plastic packaging products, in order to diversify and integrate production capabilities in response to market growth domestically and in the ASEAN region.

Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP reports that SCGP has continuously increased investment in Vietnam during the past decade, integrating businesses dealing in packaging paper, fiber-based packaging, and flexible packaging with the aim at meeting demands of customers and consumers in Vietnam and the ASEAN region, which are witnessing sustained growth, and jointly developing products with an eye toward expanding the Vietnamese and export markets.

In the latest investment, on July 23, 2021, SCGP has announced the completion of of its 70% merger and partnership (M&P) investment in Duy Tan Plastics Manufacturing Corporation (Duy Tan), Vietnam’s leading producer of rigid plastic packaging products, which follows the previous disclosure to the Stock Exchange of Thailand on February 9, 2021.

Payment for the 70% M&P stake is the immediate 3,630 billion VND (approximately 5,170 million Baht), followed by the second payment which will be based on Duy Tan’s incremental financial performance for FY2020 and FY2021, and when combined with the first payment will be no more than the total of 6,400 billion VND (approximately 9,120 million Baht). This transaction is through SCGP Rigid Packaging Solutions Pte. Ltd. (“SCGPRS”), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of SCGP. Duy Tan’s financial performance will be consolidated from August 2021 onward.

Duy Tan is Vietnam’s leading producer of rigid plastic packaging products with five manufacturing facilities.     Its B2B clients are multinational companies and local consumer goods producers of leading brands in Vietnam while B2C clients are provided with home products under Duy Tan brand, such as food wares and containers which are distributed widely within Vietnam through over 16,000 retail outlets, wholesalers and supermarkets.

On a last twelve months basis (Q3/2020 – Q2/2021), Duy Tan recorded revenue of approximately 5,025 billion VND (approximately 7,170 million Baht), net profit after tax of approximately 650 billion VND (approximately 930 million Baht) and had assets of approximately 5,000 billion VND (approximately 7,130 million Baht).

“This acquisition will enable SCGP to  provide a complete line of packaging products and expertise to better meet specific needs of consumers. In addition, it helps  leveraging technological operational strength and resource pooling across operations,” Mr. Wichan says.

“Moreover, this transaction affirms SCGP’s commitment to contribute to the economic growth and the development of plastic industry in Vietnam.”

SCGP Pro May : "INSPIRATION"...can be
Created & Passed Forward

Loading Data...

While inspirations give a start to some dreams, it takes determination to make a dream come true. Whenever these two elements are combined, success can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone.

P-Story features the life of Ariya Jutanugarn, better known as Pro May, in this volume because this young Thai became the world’s No. 1 female golfer at the age of just 21. Even though she missed a golden opportunity in her teenage years, she has managed to come back in grand style. Lately, she has also become the first Thai to win Honda LPGA Thailand.

Mindset for Success

Other than having a supportive family and extensive training, Ariya herself has developed a good mindset. Her sports career started because she enjoyed playing golf and dreamed of taking care of her family. Her determination has then given her wings, paving way for her to become the world’s No. 1 female professional golfer in 2017. The top spot, however, did not make her as happy as she thought it would do. Instead, the pressure kept piling up as she became more afraid of failure. But rather than getting stuck with that fear, she has redefined her “goal”. When she steps into a match, she sets her sight on the new goal of establishing a foundation for poor children – something that could be fulfilled if she was the champion.

In the middle of 2018, she was ranked No. 1 for the second time. This time, delight filled her heart because she knew the value of her new goal.

“I don’t focus on winning anymore. I just think that I will make myself proud today. This way, my performance is better than expected,” Ariya reveals.

Inspiring Role Model

Despite her immense success, Ariya has faced several challenges and disappointments. She has braved through them all by understanding that things keep changing and problems will make her stronger.

Ariya says she has started from zero and thus should not be afraid of starting from scratch again. She is determined to enjoy all aspects of her life every single day. When obstacles prove self- confidence. She does not compare herself with others, because she recognizes that everyone is different.

Thanks to her inspiring character, Ariya has been an idol to many including professional golfer Atthaya Thitikul. During a 2017 interview, Atthaya revealed that she refused to give up hard training because of Ariya, who proves a success comes from huge efforts. Today, Atthaya has been training hard and shown great discipline as she focuses on doing well for her family.

Path to Success

2000 Ariya started playing golf at the age of 5 with her parents as her coaches.
2003 She won a runner-up in Junior World tournaments in the United States.
2012 She turned into a professional golfer.
2013 – She attracted sponsorship, accumulating enough cash prizes to fulfill her dream of supporting her family financially.Just months after becoming a professional golfer, her shoulder was dislocatedduring training. Following hospitalization, she needed to adjust her swing to stay on professional-golfer track.
2015 She had been eliminated in 10 consecutive contests. The disappointment was so big that she almost stopped playing golf professionally.
2016 She was named Rolex Player of the Year and received the biggest cash prize in LPGA.
2017 She became the world’s No. 1 female golfer for the first time.
2018 She won all big prizes in LPGA Tour and being named Rolex Player of the Year. Not only that she received the biggest cash prizes from LPGA, but she also earned the Vare Trophy (for the player with the lowest scoring average for the season).
2019 Pro May the Movie, which features Ariya and her elder sister (also a professional golfer), was screened.

SCGP Service Mind That Goes Beyond Customer Expectation

Staff responsible for the offline and online distribution of Fest products are here today to share their ideas and techniques about how to impress customers. Thanks to their contribution, FEST sales have risen even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am in charge of a Fest Shop, a Touch Point between customers and our brand. The important and first impression can be achieved with the ability to recommend the right products. Customers may not make purchase decisions right away. But if given useful information, they will come back.

“My team has cultivated good ties with customers too. The more we talk, the more we understand their needs. A service mind always helps too. For example, when customers cannot carry all goods back to their vehicle on their own, we give a hand. Some customers are so impressed that they not only return to buy more but also often give us small gifts like snacks.

“Guided by such mindset, we focus on sincere services and exceeding customer expectations. We are also polite and treat customers equally. We always listen to what customers want to say. If they complain, it means they still love us. If they don’t love us, they will just never return.”

“My work mainly deals with online platforms, such as Facebook, LINE Official, and website. As

I usually communicate with customers in writing, I need to be careful about choices of words.

I also must ensure that my written messages reflect my willingness to serve. I try to be polite yet friendly. My seniors have made my job fun by allowing me to experiment with new ideas and pursue new possibilities.

“Regarding web design, we need to maintain the balance between speed and beautiful presentation. We also must ensure steps involved are streamlined. Frequently asked questions have been used for our website’s content creation.

“My job is very challenging because we need to respond fast. If we are slow, we may lose opportunities to sell. Real Time Marketing is key to making it easy for customers to make decisions. Promotions should be easy to understand. We need to bring as many potential customers as possible to our website.

“We have kept improving our website to deliver better experiences to customers. Thanks to my job, I can listen to the opinions of so many customers. I pay attention to every voice. Customers’ feedback let us know what improvements we need.”

SCGP has seriously listened to the Voice of Customers, which is crucial to product/service development, in pursuit of its goal to become Total Packaging Solutions Provider. The company has now had packaging to suit the needs of everyone, regardless of his/her lifestyle, age, or occupation.

We have got an opportunity to interview a family whose members have different career and lifestyle. In the family are Mr. Harun and Mrs. Jaruwan Kanokvaliwongs, who import and distribute Dream Chef kitchenware, and her mother Mrs. Ambhorn Assanawittaya, who owns Come Home Cafe. Let’s find out how each of them has chosen packaging and what functional factors are behind their decision making.

Packaging for Stronger Brand

Mrs. Jaruwan reveals that Dream Chef products, which are imported from South Korea, are distributed via department stores as well as online platforms.

“We have seen significant online sales growth since the Work-From-Home mode started. Having more time at home, many people think it is safer to cook their own food. We have carefully selected packaging to ensure that our customers will open the boxes and find our kitchenware intact. It is a way to impress customers, win their confidence, and encourage good word-of-mouth,” she continues.

“We have chosen packaging from SCGP’s partners because it is well-designed, durable, and lightweight. It has a clean surface and can feature of our printed logo and company details,” she explains, “As customer feedback has been good, we have confidence in quality.”

So far, she hopes that packaging can become even lighter because it will mean a lower logistic cost.

Packaging for Easier Life

Responsible for Dream Chef marketing at work, Mr. Harun manages his family’s household at home. He, for instance, has been shopping for its groceries. When he goes shopping, he is interested in not just product quality but also packaging design.

“At supermarkets, I look for appealing packages – something that is easy to carry and remove the need to use a plastic bag. I also appreciate packages that are easier to organize inside my car and my home,” this part-time househusband reveals.

“Importantly, I love things that make me feel good. I am always attracted to bottles that are made from recycled plastics. I feel I am a good man when using such stuff because they are kind to the earth,” he said.

Not Just Protective Packaging

Come Home Cafe has offered dine-in, catering, and food-delivery services for eight years now, with a strong emphasis on food safety and a variety of packaging.

“We serve delicious dishes, using fresh ingredients and hygienic process. Our focus on safety means we are very cautious about our food packaging. That’s why we have chosen Fest. For delivery services, we need tightly-sealed boxes that are also easy to stack up. We have given feedback and have seen constant packaging improvement,” Mrs. Ambhorn says.

“Another problem in a food business surrounds the storage of fresh ingredients. During the COVID-19 situation, I was worried about ingredients rotting during storage. So, I looked for packaging that could keep ingredients fresh longer. My kids then recommended OptiBreathTM. It helps somewhat. The rest depends on my good storage and management processes.”

Feedback from her family reflects the voice of customers in both B2B and B2C groups. SCGP is indeed all ears as it seeks to respond increasingly better to the lifestyle of everyone.

3 Tangible Aspects of Sustainability

SCGP 3 Tangible Aspects of Sustainability
Loading Data...

At the mention of sustainability, some think of environmental care, some think of modern development, while some others think of the quality of life. While interpretations may vary, they are in fact about one same goal.

ESG: Shield in Times of Change

ESG principle generally sustains businesses in the face of challenges. The environmental aspect of sustainability provides the efficient use of resources and minimization of adverse environmental impacts. The social aspect prescribes equality, care for vendors/customers, and good community relations. The governance aspect, meanwhile, upholds transparency, fosters innovation, and pursues proper risk management. So, if companies embrace ESG, they are set to enjoy profitability as well as sustainable growth.

ESG & Sustainable Investment

ESG is directly related to “Sustainable Investment”. For such investment, investors focus on ESG as well as financial performance of a company. S&P, which compiles the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (D.JSI), advises companies must accord importance to building investors’ wealth and long-term risk management. A company that pollutes the air, ignores local communities, and engages in bribery, after all, risks being sued. Their survival and sustainable growth are at risk.

SCGP has always complied with ESG framework, thus enjoying both continued growth and investors’ trust. Not only SCGP has published Sustainability Report but also committed to “Sustainable Development Goals” for its strategic operations. For Environmental, SCGP has reduced resource/energy use to maintain ecological balance in the long run. For Social, SCGP has conducted fair business operations with social responsibility, employee welfare, and commitment to quality-of-life enhancement. For Economic, SCGP focuses on not just profit but also value creation. It seeks to respond to the needs of all stakeholder groups, keep pace with the changing world, and encourage the business sector to embrace Corporate Governance in pursuit of sustainability.

In the face of various challenges and volatile situations, the industrial sector will need to adapt and uphold ESG. SCGP, with its clear guideline, has successfully built its business strengths and delivered good things to society.
