SCGP X THAI-DENMARK Bendable Paper Straw: Innovation for Eco-Friendly Milk Cartons

Loading Data...

Thanks to the collaboration between SCGP and the Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand (DPO), Thai-Denmark is the first brand to have used paper straws from a local producer in Thailand. The innovative straw appears on shelves alongside Thai-Denmark’s Lactose-Free UHT Milk. Deputy Director-General of DPO* Mr. Suchart Chariyalertsak is here with a LOT to talk about the beginning of this partnership as well as his organization’s missions.

Missions for Thai Farmers

DPO has two main missions. The first is to promote dairy farming. Not only that DPO has educated dairy farmers about useful knowledge, but it has also provided comprehensive support. For example, DPO has even handled cow-milk breeding and offered to buy cow milk from farmers at a guaranteed price. The second mission is to operate a milk business under Thai-Denmark brand.

“Our milk business has bought 700 tons of cow milk a day. The volume accounts for 20 percent of the country’s total cow-milk purchase volume. So, we are Thailand’s biggest cow-milk buyer. We have now operated five factories across Thailand, processing cow milk into milk products. Even during the COVID-19 crisis, we have continued to buy cow milk from farmers despite impacts on our operations,” Mr. Suchart said.

“We have intended to establish DPO as a well-loved organization among farmers as well as consumers. In the UHT milk sector, we have been Thailand’s Most Admired Brand for two consecutive years already. Moreover, Thai-Denmark is the leader in the general-milk segment that covers fresh milk, sweetened flavored milk, and chocolate milk. We have two major product categories. The first covers UHT products while the other presents pasteurized milk, yoghurt, and ice cream,” he continued.

Change Today for Better Tomorrow

After DPO established its subcommittee on corporate governance, social responsibility and environmental responsibility two years ago, it began studying eco-friendly packaging. Around that time, the Cabinet passed a resolution to cancel the use of four plastic products including plastic straws. DPO thus decided to consult SCGP about the feasibility of developing paper straws for Thai-Denmark milk.

“The consultation led to serious R&D. SCGP dispatched its team to our factory to experiment with its prototypes. Paper straws needed for our products must be bendable so that they can be conveniently affixed to milk cartons. As paper-straw production cost is significantly higher than plastic straws, we have introduced paper straws for our lactose-free products first,” Mr. Suchart explained.

“SCGP is the first Thai company to have successfully produced such bendable paper straws. After this innovation hit the market, it has received good feedback. It is widely praised on social media. We are proud that our consumers have shown their support for our environmental care. At present, the government has also promoted environmental causes and encouraged state enterprises to integrate the Circular Economy concept into their operations,” he added.

“Eco-Friendly Innovations,” the Endless Collaboration

The bendable paper straws are part of the output from DPO x SCGP collaborations. Named a DPO business partner, SCGP has worked with DPO on many plans for the public and the environment.

“We have recognized SCGP potential. SCGP is exemplary in regard to organizational-management tools and efficiency-enhancement approaches. It has been widely accepted among state enterprises and business organizations. We are proud to have SCGP as our partner,” Mr. Suchart said.

“In the future, we hope SCGP will help ensure paper-straw production cost get more affordable, so that we can introduce such eco-friendly choice to our other products too. If we can reduce the use of plastic straws further or even stop the use, we will be able to reduce a huge amount of waste,” he continued.

“You may notice that Thai-Denmark has already introduced eco-friendly packages for our new UHT Milk products-UHT taro-flavored milk and Maha Chanok Mango-flavored milk. Launched on 12 August 2021, these two new products are in “SIGNATURE Full Barrier” cartons. In other words, their packages are 69 percent of paper, 25 percent of PE Material, and 6 percent of aluminum. The PE material here is made of biological compounds, produced from pine oil. Curbing carbon-dioxide emissions, pine trees are replaceable. Such cartons are therefore 94 percent friendly to the environment. They have to contain aluminum because the substance is critical to food preservation. Thai-Denmark is the first brand to use such eco-friendly cartons. This is because we have made it a major policy to be kind to the environment,” Mr. Suchart concluded.

SCG Packaging Public Company Limited (SCGP), a leading regional packaging solutions provider aiming to propel sustainable operations, recently sealed long-term support of its first 4-year Sustainability-Linked Loan (SLL) worth a total of THB 5 billion, with Krungsri. The success of this SLL issuance emphasizes both organizations’ ESG mission as the country’s sustainability leaders, and it is an important step for integrating cooperation leading to solid growth in ASEAN.

Because of its experience and expertise in sustainability-linked financial products, Krungsri has been appointed as sustainability coordinator aside from acting as the sole lender of this loan. The structure of interest rates for SLL is associated with the Sustainability Performance Targets (SPTs), where the Bank will adjust down the interest rate annually if the company can achieve the specified sustainability goals.

Mr. Danaidej Ketsuwan, Chief Financial Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP, stated, “SCGP has always prioritized sustainability in business operation, along with Circular Economy principle to optimize natural resources. It is a good opportunity that Krungsri, our important business and financial partner, has shared the same goal to encourage sustainable business. We are delighted to receive the support on this Sustainability-Linked Loan or SLL, which requires the achievement of criteria on ESG and KPIs as agreed to grant the loan approval. SCGP receives SLL support from Krungsri, with the total loan amount of THB 5 billion for a term of four years. The structure of loan interest rates is associated with the Sustainability Performance Targets (SPTs) where the rates will be adjusted down in line with operational achievements of sustainability goals. The three SPTs include; reducing greenhouse gas emissions according to the set target, managing water resources by reducing the use of water from external sources, and increasing sales portion of eco-friendly goods and services with a SCG Green Choice label. SCGP is the first packaging solutions provider in ASEAN who received the Sustainability-Linked Loan. This SLL demonstrates that sustainability can increase business opportunities, and it is an important milestone to make our business thriving and sustainable in ASEAN.

Mr. Pornsanong Tuchinda, Krungsri Head of Commercial Banking, said, “Krungsri remains committed to becoming a trusted banking partner for our corporate customers, as well as adhering to the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. We continue to develop financial products for ESG-related businesses, particularly Sustainability-Linked Loan (SLL), as an alternative for our commercial banking customers through the synergy between MUFG’s expertise and network together with Krungsri’s unique strengths. This SLL is an extension of environmental cooperation with SCGP, and Krungsri firmly believes in SCGP’s strengths in finance and ongoing ESG business operation in which SCGP is considered Thailand’s and the region’s leader in sustainability. We provide this SLL as another solution to create added value for our customer and support them in propelling the sustainable business to bring about change for consumers and industries according to its goals. Moreover, this cooperation will be another important step to expand SCGP’s business in ASEAN, which is in line with Krungsri’s goal to connect customers’ needs across ASEAN and help them grow, with the strong supports from Krungsri and MUFG regional networks.”

SCGP is moving ahead with an expansion plan to create a new production complex in the north of Vietnam and establish a packaging paper production base within the complex with a total investment of over 11,793 million baht. Commercial start-up is expected early 2024, to integrate SCGP’s operations in Vietnam and meet challenges of the steadily growing packaging market.

Mr.Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP says:“SCGP has launched a growth strategy in ASEAN, especially in Vietnam with its high growth potential.Since 2009 we have launched a strategic investment plan there by establishing packaging paper production based in the south of Vietnam through Vina Kraft Paper Company Limited (VKPC).Based in Bin Duong, the gateway to Ho Chi Minh City, the company is a 70:30 joint venture between SCGP and Rengo Company Limited (Japan). In 2016, VKPC doubled its original capacity in response to growing demands for packaging products in the region.”

“Moreover, SCGP has expanded our businesses by investing in various packaging operations in Vietnam, including packaging paper, fiber-based packaging, foodservice packaging, performance and polymer packaging.”
Vietnam has strong domestic consumption and is an important export base in the region, a big draw for multinational companies to invest their operations there, especially to the northern part of the country. The demand of packaging paper and related packaging products in Vietnam is expected to increase at approximately 6-7% per year during 2021-2024 (source: Frost & Sullivan).

In order to grow alongside other industries inside Vietnam and to meet increasing demands for packaging products, SCGP has decided to expand through Vina Kraft Paper by building a new major complex in Vinh Phuc; a strategically important area in the northern part of the country, as well as adding packaging paper production facilities to boost capacity by about 370,000 tons a year. The total investment amounts to 8,133 billion VND (approximately 11,793 million baht) inclusive of the project’s machinery, civil work, land, financial cost, working capital of state-of-the-art packaging paper production technology and infrastructures. The investment is currentlyunder Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. We expect the plan to be completed and commercial production to begin in early 2024, and result in VKPC’s total packaging paper capacity of 870,000 tons per annum which will complement our expansion plan and boost our competitiveness for the future.

“SCGP has steadily invested in Vietnam with an expectation that our 2021 pro-forma annual revenue from sales will exceed 15,000 million baht (including the revenue from recent merger and partnership deals, which has been reported to the SET). Driven by SCGP’s existing business model in Vietnam consists of broad horizontal offerings and deep vertical integration primarily located in the south of Vietnam, our new investment in this production complex will allow us to pursue growth opportunities in the north of Vietnam and the south of China. This new strategic complex will enable potential synergies among SCGP’s various businesses in terms of production efficiency and development of integrated packaging solutions, and help us meet the increasing demands for packaging products in the region.” concludes Mr. Wichan.

The company contributes its expertise in design and production with high performance and polymer materials to come up with masks that fit the facial characteristics of Thai people so that they are comfortable to wear and equipped with replaceable filters that provide efficient protection against germs and particulate matter.

Ms. Suvimol Chivaluk, Director and Manager of SCG Foundation, expresses concerns for the Thai people who are facing a treacherous situation because of the rapid spread of the coronavirus which has infected a large number of people in recent months. The foundation wishes to play a part in helping Thailand to quickly overcome the current crisis. The foundation has assisted health professionals, patients and people affected by the infection in all 77 provinces throughout the country with innovations and technologies.

Moreover, SCGP has contributed financial assistance to make it possible for SCG Foundation to donate 10,000 CUre AIR SURE masks to health professionals and front-line workers in more than 100 hospitals through its network of members throughout the country.

Meanwhile, SCGP is committed to paying special interest to environmental protection and social justice as well as upholding the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles of sustainability.
