SCGP is pressing ahead with the integrated consumer solutions strategy by entering into the medical supplies and labware industry in response to a global megatrend, which sees heightened consumer awareness of hygiene and healthcare, and changing demographics with growing aging population. An agreement has been signed to acquire 85% of Deltalab, S.L. in Spain, a recognized European manufacturer and distributor of high-quality medical supplies and labware. This will enhance the company’s business potential by elevating SCGP’s customers and products portfolio and enriching global services capabilities.

Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP reports that one of the global megatrends is consumers’ heightened awareness of healthcare as well as the changing demographics which sees multiple countries with growing aging populations, both of which require laboratory diagnostic testing. Such developments have led to growing demands for healthcare and medical products, which have become a high-growth segment with a market value of about US$26 billion (approx. 810 billion Baht) in Europe and US$48 billion (approx. 1.5 trillion Baht) in Asia Pacific. Mr. Wichan says SCGP is determined to provide integrated consumer solutions and expand into other business to fulfill the diverse needs of customers. The company wants to expand into downstream operations, particularly those consumer goods having to do with targeted lifestyle, healthcare, and medical. “This investment is an important step that allows SCGP to bring its experience and expertise in the manufacture of performance and polymer packaging as well as production knowledge including injection molding process, similar
production technologies, and high level of research and development related to healthcare and medical etc. to develop innovations and new solutions to fulfill increasing consumer needs,” Mr. Wichan says.

“SCGP will implement its strategy to forge cooperation with partners with regards to technology exchange and joint research and development in order to create more diverse products, expand our customer base, and boost our capability to offer world-class services. Moreover, an important foundation would be laid for expansion into businesses relating to healthcare and medical segment in Asia to realize sustainable growth and higher value-added prospects for SCGP.”

SCGP innovates food packaging to satisfy consumer lifestyles Introducing OptiBreath® to keep freshness and Odor LockTM to lock in food aromas

Loading Data...

SCGP has been engaging in research and development of innovative food packaging that keeps up with new lifestyles, tackles storage problems and increases conveniences for customers and consumers. Two new innovative packagings from SCGP to usher in the season of fruits are: OptiBreath® to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer, and Odor LockTM, made from special plastics, to lock in aromas of food and fruits and prevent condensation when stored in the refrigerator.

SCGP understands the importance of sustained research and development to innovate solutions that respond to various needs and solve problems for customers and consumers as well as add value to products and enhance life conveniences. Some of these include food packaging that needs not be cut open before being heated in a microwave oven or packaging cover that can be easily peeled off. Such attention to R&D demonstrates the company’s leadership in integrated product innovations in ASEAN.

Most recently, SCGP has researched and developed new and innovative food packaging capable of prolonging the freshness of fruits and vegetables. OptiBreath® keeps fruits and vegetables fresh longer by controlling the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide inside and outside the packaging at an appropriate level to reduce the growth of microorganisms so as to maintain the quality of produce, their freshness, nutritional values, and natural flavors. Vegetables can be kept fresh longer by 3-5 days and fruits by 7-11 days, thus helping to reduce storage costs and increase opportunities for upcountry and overseas sales, which require longer time for delivery.

Introduced at the same time is Odor LockTM, an innovative packaging that locks in strong aromas of food or fruits. It is made from a special type of plastics which prevents the smell of food, such as durian, chili paste, and salted fish, from seeping out. It is designed for consumers who want to keep strong-smelling food in the same package. Options include three-sided seal bags and pleated bags, made to be sealed easily with heat but also kept in cold storage or ice with no problems of leakage. They may be refrigerated without causing condensation within, therefore helping to preserve food flavors.

Both innovative packagings could solve problems and enhance usage for customers and consumers. By prolonging the freshness of fruits and vegetables and locking in food aromas, they respond to the needs of fruit and vegetable sellers, who will be able to deliver their produce to distant destinations and thus add value to their products.

Phoenix Lava

Pain Point

SCGP is accelerating investment plans to grow its foodservice packaging operations in anticipation of consumer megatrend. Production of pressboard foodservice packaging and molded pulp packaging will see capacity boosted by an additional 1,838 million pieces a year. These projects aiming at expanding overseas markets require 631 million baht of investment.

Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP, reports that, according to the Company’s assessment, demands for foodservice packaging continue to stay on the upward trend as a result of changing consumer lifestyles as take outs and home delivery through various apps have become a megatrend that will contribute positively to the growth of foodservice packaging businesses. The overall outlook for foodservice business in ASEAN between 2021 and 2024 is poised to grow by an average of 6-7% a year.

Consequently, SCGP has been expanding its foodservice packaging production in recent years in response to rising consumer demands and changing lifestyles. Operations in Thailand and Malaysia have subsequently grown to meet demands in ASEAN and Japan, while recent acquisition of Go-Pak UK Limited (Go-Pak) enhances ability to expand its customer base globally.

Most recently, SCGP is proceeding with its investment in two new projects in a move to boost the growth of its foodservice packaging operations. Production capacities for pressboard foodservice packaging in Ratchaburi plant and the Binh Duong plant in Vietnam will be boosted by 1,615 pieces a year. Commercial startup is expected to be in the 3rd quarter of 2021.

At the same time, investment has also gone into expanding the production capacity for molded pulp packaging by 223 million pieces a year in Kanchanaburi plant, where commercial startup is expected to be in the 2nd quarter of 2022. Investment for both projects is 631 million baht, which will boost production capacities in response to market expansion and growth in demands for foodservice packaging, especially in overseas markets.

“After accomplishing our expansion plans, we expect our annual revenue to increase by 35% as the result of the increased production capacities from the current foodservice packaging operations in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam combined, which will contribute to our sustained growth in ASEAN and beyond.” says Mr. Wichan.

SCGP tops up its success in Indonesia, expands investment portfolio in downstream packaging in Intan Group as demands in ASEAN grow

SCGP continues to grow its packaging investment in Indonesia as it’s poised to purchase 75% of the Intan Group, a major producer of corrugated containers with established bases in four strategic locations. The deal extends the Company’s earlier success in packaging paper investment, boosting its potential and firming up its integrated packaging business operations.

Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP, reveals that the Company’s strategy is to expand in the ASEAN region to boost its integrated packaging business by increasing regional market coverage. He says the expansion in the corrugated containers will be beneficial to SCGP’s integrated packaging businesses encompassing both the operations as well as its aim to expand customer base in the region.

With a population of more than 270 million, Indonesia is brimming with potentials. Since 2013 SCGP has launched a sustained growth strategy in Indonesia through five companies, including Fajar, DAP (a Fajar subsidiary), PTPM, INDOCORR and INDORIS. The assets include two corrugated containers manufacturing plants, a printing house for corrugated containers, and two packaging paper manufacturing plants. In 2020 the five firms generated 17,577 million Baht in sales in Indonesia, equivalent to 18.94% of SCGP’s total sales.

Having invested in the five Indonesian companies, SCGP has become their partners in expanding businesses, exchanging expertise, and engaging in mutually beneficial activities, such as reducing financial costs, and increasing production efficiency. In April 2021, SCGP has started up in a new production facility to increase packaging paper capacity of Fajar.

Furthermore, SCGP has worked closely with PTPM, INDOCORR and INDORIS, packaging subsidiaries, leading to technological exchanges, increases in production capacity, cost reduction, waste minimization, IT system improvements, and introduction of SCGP’s innovative Lightweight G Technology in the packaging production system.

The SCGP CEO adds that the Company recently has expanded its investment portfolio in Indonesia. It has signed a share purchase agreement on May 10, 2021, to acquire 75% stake of PT Indonesia Dirtajaya Aneka Industri Box, PT Bahana Buana Box and PT Rapipack Asritama, collectively called the Intan Group. The deal was undertaken through TCG Solutions Pte. Ltd. in SCGP. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the middle of 2021.

Intan Group is one of Indonesia’s manufacturers of corrugated containers. It operates in four strategically important areas, namely, Surabaya, Semarang, Bekasi, and Minahasa. Its customer base encompasses both multinational and domestic producers of food and beverages and consumer goods. In 2020 Intan Group generated revenues of 1,329 billion rupiahs (approximately 92 million US dollars or 3,057 million Baht).

This round of investment in Indonesia is aimed at responding to anticipated growth in the ASEAN region as well as strengthen the Company’s ability to provide a larger variety of products. It will promote a symbiotic relationship between SCGP and the companies in which it has invested.

Moreover, the Company will be able to offer a diverse variety of products as well as integrated packaging solutions that can fulfill the different needs of individual customers. At the same time, it will be able to develop innovative products to add values and enhance the Company’s position as the leading provider of integrated packaging solutions in ASEAN.

Sixty-two organizations join forces to launch a project –“United to Fight Against Covid: Transform Used Paper Into SCGP Paper Field Hospital Bed” — to campaign for consumers to care for the environment and become a part of the project by sending used paper boxes for recycling and reuse in accordance with the Circular Economy. Committed to helping society during the current Covid-19 pandemic, the organizations open collection centers of used paper boxes to be recycled into SCGP paper field hospital bed for distribution to those in need throughout the country.

Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, SCGP, reports that the company has engaged in a cooperative effort as one of 62 organizations in launching the “United to Fight Against Covid: Transform Used Paper Into SCGP Paper Field Hospital Beds” project in a campaign to encourage consumers to take good care of the environment.

The project aims to educate and create an understanding about using and managing leftover paper materials in order to bring them back for reuse. This includes recycling the materials into “SCGP paper field hospital beds”, a creative design for social innovation, which has been developed to help those afflicted with Covid-19 and to support the work of health personnel. Collection of the materials is slated to take place from April 28 to May 31.

“The new Covid-19 outbreak has created a shortage of hospital beds and led to the setting up of field hospitals in various localities, and as a result created a need for large numbers of field beds. For this reason, SCGP has designed ‘SCGP paper field hospital bed’ made of 100% recycled paper that weighs only 14 kilograms and can be easily and rapidly assembled and installed. The bed can bear the horizontal weight of 100 kg.

“However, a constant demand has led to 62 organizations joining hands to set up stations to collect used paper boxes for recycling into SCGP paper field hospital beds,” says Mr. Wichan. Any person wishing to participate in this project may deposit their used or disused paper boxes at collection stations set up by all 62 participating partners. SCGP will collect them to be recycled and produced as SCGP paper field hospital beds for distribution to those who need them.

“SCGP wishes to thank cooperative efforts by all organizations and people who lend their support to the project to help fellow Thais to overcome this challenge together. Moreover, we are helping to conserve the environment by recycling a resource for reuse and to create the utmost good.

JOSHUA PAS : Making it 1% better each day
is exciting enough!

Invest in experiences

Growing up overseas, Dr. Pas worked part time during his university years. It was quite normal for university students to work and study at the same time in western culture, after all.

Dr. Pas had built a great 16-year career in the United States. For example, he used to work for Bose Corporation in Boston and also Intel of Silicon Valley. He had already developed Data Analytics skills and mastered in Supply Chain management before joining Thailand’s SCG in 2013. “SCG initially assigned me to handle Digital Transformation. Serving as CDO (Chief Digital Officer), I was also in charge of AddVentures that focuses on investments and finance, as well as ZERO TO ONE or SCG’s Startup Studio. At the end of last year, I took up the post of SCGP’s Global Foodservice Packaging Head,” he said.

Understand the mode

Dr. Pas emphasized that understanding and efficiently managing each work mode was necessary.

“In execution mode, everything must be accurate. But in exploration mode, you must be able to accept less-than-100% performance. Improvement and Test-and-Learn during exploration are understandable,” he pointed out.

In his view, forming several small teams will encourage agility. Members in each team should have different age, gender and expertise. The greater the diversity, the better. When they get together, work ambience will be good. They will want to hear what other team members will say. They can inspire each other all the time. On performance evaluation, Dr. Joshua places an emphasis on OKRs (Objectives & Key Results). Simply put, OKRs presents both short-term and long-term key performance indicators (KPIs). Team members will know what they have to do this week and this year. “Project Management is also very important. It is not too complicated either. Just communicate and collaborate. Do what we are good at. Recruit others’ help for tasks they do better,” he explained.

Grow the top line

Asked about Merger and Partnership (M&P), Dr. Joshua believes it represents a good challenge whereby one can learn about different culture and consumer behaviors.

“M&P reflects that we look for a partner. We do not think that we have bought a business. We let our partner keep doing what it is good at. We step in only where our contribution is useful. M&P aims to grow the top line. It therefore must place a strong emphasis on Integration and Synergy Project. We may introduce our Thai business models to Europe or US. Or, we may apply what we have seen there to Thai market,” this executive explained. “Europeans and Americans are different from Thais in some ways. So, we must determine what parts we can apply. By the way, on the overall, I am very excited about what we will be able to do without partners,” he added.

At SCGP, everyone is important

Just as the interview was coming to a close, P-DNA asked Dr. Joshua about SCGP’s sustainable growth. “Everyone at SCGP is an important mechanism. So, ‘Do the Best You Can!’. If possible, act like you own SCGP businesses. Last but not least, have fun and enjoy the challenges!”, he concluded.

4 Ways to Improve Yourself

Read

“I like reading articles, including academic stuff. Read what is in our field so that we know what are cool. Read content in other fields to expand our horizons.”

Mentor

“It is really great to have a mentor, who doesn’t need to be your supervisor or respected senior.

To get a mentor, you may just walk toward the person you admire and ask, ‘Could we eat together once a month?'”

Can-do

“If you want to do something, say so. Don’t be afraid! When you take up a project, someone will be by your side and help you. They won’t let you fail badly”.

Small change add up really fast

“A former supervisor taught me this concept. If you do better by just 1% each day, you will do 38 times better in just one year.”
