SCGP continues to advance sustainable food packaging innovations, aligning with the global trend of ensuring “food security.” This trend prioritizes providing consumers with safe and healthy food that maintains nutritional value while also developing environmentally friendly packaging. By the year 2030, SCGP aims for 100% of its packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable. Ekaraj Niroj, Chief Operating Officer of Consumer and Performance Packaging Business and Enterprise Marketing Director at SCG Packaging Public Company Limited (SCGP), revealed that the company has consistently emphasized the development of “sustainable food packaging innovations.” This initiative aims to achieve food security by ensuring access to safe and nutritious food. Simultaneously, it focuses on creating sustainability and environmental friendliness, aligning with global trends and meeting the needs of customers in the food and beverage industry. “Consumer behavior nowadays places great importance on safe packaging that is free from toxins and contaminants, of appropriate quality, and capable of extending the shelf life and preserving the nutritional value of food. Consumers also seek clear information about food products, such as expiration dates, storage methods, nutritional content, and the use of eco-friendly packaging that is easily recyclable or made from recycled materials. SCGP has continuously developed such innovations to benefit and create a positive experience for consumers,” said Ekaraj. The food security and sustainability packaging innovations developed by SCGP include high-quality and safe packaging, such as OptiBreath. This packaging extends the shelf life of vegetables and fruits by using cutting-edge technology and specialized materials in the Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) system. This system helps prevent contamination of the food inside the packaging, maintains freshness, color, aroma, and taste, and slows the growth of microorganisms. It helps reduce loss and ensures that the food retains its nutritional value for a longer period. Additionally, SCGP has developed R1+, an innovative mono-material flexible packaging made from a single type of plastic, which can easily enter the recycling process. It possesses excellent properties for preventing air and moisture penetration, effectively protecting food products. In terms of foodservice packaging, Fest by SCGP offers solutions that are clean, safe, and can be in direct contact with food while being environmentally friendly. The product line includes Fest Fresh Pak (Frozen), an innovative chilled fresh meat paper tray that can withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius. The packaging remains sturdy throughout the packing and transportation process until it reaches consumers. It is made from at least 94% renewable materials that can be replanted. In addition, Fest Redi Pak caters to the frozen and chilled food ready meal tray segment. It helps maintain the freshness and taste of food, with 90% of its main material being eucalyptus pulp, which is biodegradable within 60 days. This packaging is not only attractive and durable but also convenient for microwave heating. Its design ensures even heat distribution, preventing the food from becoming excessively hot or overcooked. “SCGP has allocated an investment budget for the research and development of packaging innovations, averaging 0.5% of annual sales revenue. This demonstrates our commitment to developing sustainable packaging. In 2023, 99.7% of our packaging was recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Our goal is to make 100% of the packaging recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2030,” said Ekaraj.

SCGP Strengthens Integrated Packaging Solutions in ASEAN with Five Strategies for Sustainable Growth

SCGP เสริมบรรจุภัณฑ์ครบวงจรอาเซียน

At this moment, the world is facing a crisis with severe impacts from climate change and environmental challenges. Businesses around the globe recognize the importance of these issues and are shifting their strategies and operations to align with ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) framework. This is to prepare for tackling future challenges and achieving long-term sustainable growth.

Similarly, SCG Packaging Public Company Limited, or SCGP, a leading packaging company in ASEAN, places significant emphasis on ESG. Wichan Jitpukdee, CEO of SCGP, highlighted the company’s operational plans, noting that the packaging industry in ASEAN is continuously recovering. This recovery is driven by innovation, economic factors, manufacturing, exports, and Thailand’s thriving tourism sector, which have increased demand for packaging across industries. The integrated packaging solutions business has seen sales growth across all product groups, with signs of recovery in durable goods packaging such as clothing and footwear. Meanwhile, the packaging paper business has benefited from increased domestic demand and exports in certain areas, especially in South Asia. The pulp and paper business has also experienced a rise in foodservice packaging sales, driven by the recovery of the tourism sector.

SCGP has advanced with five key strategies to drive sustainable business operations and ensure quality growth. These strategies include: 1. Expanding production capacity in line with economic growth rates (GDP) and utilizing merger and partnership (M&P) strategies in businesses with growth potential, such as consumer packaging, paper packaging, and health and medical supplies & labware businesses. This expansion aims to meet the continuously recovering demand for packaging from manufacturing and exports; 2. Enhancing customer experience and innovation by addressing customer pain points. For example, SCGP has introduced easy-peel innovations for yogurt packaging lids, ensuring a mess-free consumer experience; 3. Implementing Operational Excellence with “B2B2C” customers by integrating B2C and B2B business models. This approach aims to create a business that perfectly meets consumer demands by connecting business owners directly with other businesses and end consumers; 4. Conducting business with ESG framework, such as using Post-Consumer Recycled Resin (PCR) in rigid plastic packaging production. This initiative helps reduce the generation of new plastics and promotes green packaging. SCGP also produces paper with a recycling content of up to 99.6%; and 5. Focusing on People and Capability, promoting employee skill enhancement and development to achieve better performance and excellence in capabilities.
“It is evident that everything is driven by People and Capability. We have successfully driven business growth in 10 countries using these five strategies, with the understanding that our role is to deliver lifestyles that enhance consumer convenience. If asked whether our products have a wow factor, they may not, but what matters is the value for money and the enhancement of the overall experience.”

Furthermore, Wichan highlighted a series of innovations demonstrating that SCGP can align its business with every dimension of ESG. For instance, the “Carbon Reduction Solutions” in the packaging paper business have received carbon footprint certification for 55 products from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization. These products include containerboard, corrugated paper, and coated whiteboard. There are plans to expand this certification to cover all packaging paper products in 2024, including roll and sheet paper for sack paper, plaster liner board, coated duplex board, and industrial bags.

“Innovation in resource reduction,” such as nanocellulose fibers for the paper and packaging industry, enhances paper strength while reducing weight and increasing resistance to water, oil, and oxygen. This allows for packaging production with improved protective properties, ensuring that products reach consumers in perfect condition. Additionally, it reduces energy consumption in manufacturing and adds value to plant fibers, significantly cutting carbon emissions by up to 700,000 kgCO2e through decreased importation of raw materials. The “Green Carton” corrugated containers, produced from recycled paper, exemplifies efficient recycling processes that create new paper with maintained quality and strength. Due to lighter packaging weight, this innovation reduces raw material usage, transportation energy, and costs. It saves 42.38 kilowatt-hours of energy per ton in production and reduces paper usage by over 25 grams per square meter in each product line. To date, it has helped decrease CO2 emissions by 193,000 tons and has saved approximately 5 million trees from being cut down.

The “Mix in the Bag Spout Pouch” packaging provides convenience, being easy to use and containing the exact amount needed for one-time use, significantly reducing waste. Additionally, the “Light-Weight and High-Strength Paper” packaging has been developed using pulp refining technology that induces fiber fibrillation and chemical technology to enhance paper properties. This development maintains the paper’s strength to the original product’s standards while reducing the amount of pulp used as raw materials in the production process by at least 5% compared to conventional products.

Furthermore, there are “innovations from recycled materials,” such as recycled plastic resins from the paper recycling process. These resins use waste plastic from the recycling process, adding value by turning it into new products. They serve as an alternative plastic material for manufacturers, helping to reduce production costs. This initiative began with a pilot production at Fajar, a member of SCGP in Indonesia, and is being expanded to Dayasa, another member of SCGP in Indonesia, and SCGP’s Wang Sala plant in Thailand, with a production capacity of up to 26,000 tons of recycled plastic resins per year.

Regarding “innovative recyclable packaging,” there are innovations such as mono-material packaging, which offers product protection similar to conventional packaging, can be easily recycled, and reduces landfill waste, lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, there is paper packaging for food coated with a water-based barrier coating, which effectively prevents food leakage and can be easily recycled since it is made from FSCTM 100% certified paper pulp.

“Reclosable common footprint Carton” open-close fruit and vegetable packaging from SCGP

Loading Data...
In the first 4 months of 2023, the overall value of fruit exports in Thailand reached 1.03 billion baht. Durian, longan, as well as mangosteen, are highly consumed by both Thais and foreigners.

Nowadays, many fresh fruits are damaged or simply called “bruised” while transportation. This may be partly due to the packaging that is not conducive to protecting high-quality fresh fruit.

Fruits and vegetables must be free of impurities

The beginning of this project came when a major fresh fruit supplier, Organic Food Mart, decided to consult SCGP.

In the past, most fresh fruit packaging was a form without a lid but with a connection that could be stacked on top of each other. As a result, it will be damaged or impured during transportation.

The goal is to ensure that customer packaging can protect the product as much as possible from the transportation process to the consumer’s hands.

Concern all aspects

SCGP designer, Mr. Wanchana Sritrairattana, started their design by selecting the right packaging size for their products, which consisted of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Not specifically.

By choosing a square-shaped box for one-round transportation. Both in terms of space and volume of products, it is the most cost-effective, as well as based on ergonomic principles to make it comfortable to lift and move.

Fruit and vegetable packaging from SCGP has the advantage that it can be open-closed. The lid of the box folds together, but what is more special than normal natural packaging is that it has a lid attachment.

There is no need to worry about spoiled fruits and vegetables because SCGP does not neglect small elements such as ventilation holes by letting SCGP’s expert team calculate the ventilation hole distance on the box so that it can be placed side by side. Air can also be ventilated through all packaging while in transit.

And determine the size of the ventilation hole to suit each type of product to maintain the quality of the product in the most perfect condition as well.

In addition, SCGP’s design team is not just concerned with shipping damage, but we also thought far away into bringing fruit and vegetable box packaging to be sold in stores and not all were sold.

This is because most consumers currently do not buy whole boxes of vegetables or fruits. Sometimes you only buy a few pieces. That means there will be some left inside the package.

However, fruit and vegetable packaging from SCGP can be reused. Preserve the quality of those vegetables and fruits very well. Plus, you can turn it on and off as many times as you want without fear of breaking it.

Wide range of packing

The pattern around the packaging, the graphics team wanted it to be neutral. It can contain both fruits and vegetables according to the customer’s requirements, and with materials that meet SCGP standards, this Packaging can be used to contain other items of similar weight.

Quality of SCGP’s Reclosable common footprint Carton open-close fruit and vegetable packaging has been awarded the Asian Award. Asia Star, the category of Transport Package

If any entrepreneur wants to transform their packaging to be of high quality, standard, sustainable, and reusable. You can consult or inquire for information from SCGP.

“United Container” Drives Business with Technology and Environmental Care

“United Container” Drives Business with Technology and Environmental Care
Loading Data...

Successful business operations require considerations for society and communities to pave the way for happy co-existence. This is the work philosophy of Mr. Thatchai Piyakulchaidet, Managing Director of United Container Company Limited. His company therefore does much more than just delivering quality to customers.

Focus on Target Groups & Roar Ahead

United Container has evolved from a family business, established by Mr. Thatchai’s parents. Initially, the operation was based at the family’s home in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao – Bang Kapi area, was mostly manual, and staffed with just one worker. But the business grew over time. In 1992, it set up its current factory in Pathum Thani.

“We have mainly provided corrugated-paper packaging for niche markets. Our customers are those looking for high-quality packages and a reliable supplier such as exporters of processed foods, electronic parts, or auto parts. These target groups need durable packaging and punctual deliveries,” Mr. Thatchai explained.

“With clear focus, we have prepared our factory, machinery, and raw materials in response to customers’ needs. We think it is best to specialize to fully fulfill our target groups’ specific requirements. Through such approach, we have developed expertise and greater understanding of customers’ needs. That’s how our products and services serve our target groups best,” he continued.

Tech Update & People Capability Behind Product Quality

In the competitive business environment, a business will be sustainable only when it delivers quality and wins the hearts of customers. These two key elements exist where internal management is efficient.

“It’s a challenge to fulfill each of various orders – with diverse requirements – without any mistake. We have supplied custom-made packaging. So, most orders are different each day. It is also our duty to ensure timely deliveries. To exporters, delivery time is very important because container loading time is fixed. By addressing customers’ pain point, we give them peace of mind and time to focus on other aspects of their work,” Mr. Thatchai said.

“Not only that I have studied engineering and programming, but I have also had a passion for coding from a young age. During my childhood, my time at my dad’s factory showed me that software in fact could solve many problems and set up efficient work systems. United Container therefore has never stopped developing software and integrated information technology.

“We have built our business sustainability by keeping pace with technology and developing new software for use at our company. Thanks to such efforts, we can reduce the risk of problems and dependence on specific staff’s expertise. For example, our factory has a real-time output recording system. Our staff therefore do not need to key in information manually. The system records everything from the start and end of production time, volume produced, downtime records, and production speed. Data automatically recorded by our computer system are then analyzed in support of production/productivity improvement or waste reduction,” he added.

“Our machines and technologies have been regularly updated. On top of that, we have used quality raw materials only. Our good standards, waste reduction, efficiency improvement, and cost reduction all have contributed to our competitiveness,” he continued.

“At the heart of our business operations are our staff. We believe in good governance and employee care. We have implemented several policies to improve employees’ welfare and quality of life because we believe that our employees’ happiness is translated into good output”.

Sustainable Environmental Care

“We have placed a strong emphasis on environmental care because we think our business should coexist with communities and the environment. Our environmental care is greater than what is required by laws, with regular reviews in place. We have even imported a wastewater treatment system for 100% water recycling. Our factory therefore does not discharge a single drop of wastewater to local communities,” Mr. Thatchai pointed out.

“We have also recycled paper in collaboration with SCGP. We have gathered, compressed, and sent our paper scrap to SCGP out of trust that SCGP will handle it properly. Regarding other types of industrial waste, we have complied with laws. It is buried at an authorized landfill. In our view, mutual coexistence with communities is crucial to business sustainability.

“In addition, we have installed full-scale solar cells to generate power for our factory. On a sunny day, we hardly need power from an electricity authority. Our solar installations help curb environmental impacts as well as our production costs, which will also benefit our customers,” he continued.

Collaborating with Quality Partners

“We have chosen SCGP as our partner because of the latter’s solid quality policy. SCGP is very reliable and supports us strategically. United Container focuses on exporters and suppliers of premium products. Our customers therefore have high expectations. Packaging used for them must be exceptionally durable and delivered through a reliable supply system. SCGP perfectly answers our needs.

“Aside, we have braved through several crises with SCGP by our side before. A few years ago, a paper shortage crisis occurred but we had hardly felt any pinches because SCGP took good care of us. When the global market turned highly volatile, SCGP also helped ensure that pricing for us was still reasonable and enabled us to remain competitive. As we produce packaging at reasonable costs, our customers can compete well in their market too. SCGP has always taken good care of us. So, we really are looking forward to growing alongside SCGP in all years to come,” Mr. Thatchai concluded.
