“Banana” is considered an easily available fruit and is commonly found in the Thai market. Any kind of Banana, this fruit is full of nutrients and is suitable for all genders and ages, including those who take care of their health, exercise, and athletes.

At Singha Park Chiang Rai, Boonrawd Brewery cultivates premium banana which is a special and premium banana.

As an AAA-certified fruit, it needs to be packaged in packaging that can enhance the value of this fruit, and of course, premium banana is packed in SCGP’s premium packaging, “Premium Banana Box”.

Special Packaging

When talking about Singha Park Chiang Rai, many people may know it for its tourist attractions and is also an agricultural area with an area of about 8,000 rai, where “bananas” are cultivated, one of the farm’s most premium and famous fruits. However, let’s get to know this banana briefly.

Golden bananas are classified as AAA-grade fruits, they are premium, large-fruited, and expensive. When ripe, the peel of the banana is golden yellow and has a sweet taste.

When entering special occasions, of course, what accompanies these moments is gifts to give to dignitaries, and the most popular is fruit.

Singha Park Chiang Rai wanted to bring this banana as a special gift to a group of dignitaries at the executive level as well.

Those who take on this role include Ms.Onpawee Bavonpattanapaisarn and Ms. Atikarn Boonprakong SCGP’s design team brought a new twist to the packaging of this fruit and raised the bar for premium bananas.

Sleek Identity

The design of packaging for bananas must consider the main factors. These are the weights and patterns that can convey the strengths and identity of Singha Park Chiang Rai.

Firstly, it’s about weight, and as mentioned above, bananas are premium bananas, when the fruit is fully ripe, it is large. As a result, the structural design of the box needs to support the weight well.

The design team has developed the structure to be strong and also keep in mind the simplicity. The box is designed with an octagonal shape, adding a highlight to the front of the box by leaving space that demonstrates the product.

When it comes to fruit boxes, of course, the handles of the box itself are necessary, and that is homework to make such new boxes.

The design of the handle that the SCGP team took some time to design until the pattern finally emerged through a simple design. By hiding a good-sized handle, the handle is flat against the box. In addition, the structure considers the presence of ventilation holes for the fruit to preserve its freshness.

The second part is the “pattern” design of the packaging that must represent the uniqueness of Singha Park Chiang Rai. Further with the pattern of banana leaves that are flowing.

So what does it mean for Singha Park Chiang Rai? Of course, this may be a question that many people are wondering.

The SCGP design team hid a small gimmick around the box as well. From the uniqueness of Singha Park Chiang Rai, the landscape of Singha Park’s farmland has been studied, such as terraced tea plantations.

There are also statues of Singha or large golden sculptures that are the highlight of the farm to be placed on the packaging itself as well as a vehicle to see the atmosphere of the farm like a balloon.

Meet all Aspects

Before becoming a packaging for this premium banana. SCGP team had to do their homework carefully to come up with the perfect banana box for the customer, which was coordinated between the design and structural teams for a full month.

Such packaging design can convey the identity of both the product and the identity of Singha Park Chiang Rai. This premium banana box won the Asia Star Point Of Purchase award from the Thaistar Packaging Awards in 2021.

This demonstrates that SCGP has a team that can design packaging to meet a wide range of customer needs.

The Department of Industrial Works, led by Mr. Julapong Taweesri – Director General of the Department of Industrial Works, Mr. Sunthorn Kaewsawang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Industrial Works, and management, visited to observe the technology of the project “Development of E-Nose Technology for Odor Detection and Monitoring in Industrial Plants.” Mr. Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer of SCG Packaging Public Company Limited or SCGP, and management welcomed and provided information, as well as discussed strategies for developing E-Nose innovation at the Innovation and Product Development Center in Ratchaburi Province.

SCGP collaborated with the Department of Industrial Works, Thammasat University, and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang to study and develop odor detection and monitoring systems in industrial plants to meet international standards. This aims to enable entrepreneurs to use them for inspection and prevention of impacts on communities and the environment. Currently, the system has made significant progress and can be practically applied. It has been tested with odors from various industries, such as rubber plants, animal feed plants, Refuse Derived Fuel, pulp and paper plants, seafood processing plants etc. Additionally, it has been operational in the pulp and paper plant group of SCGP. The system accurately identifies odor characteristics and concentrations, provides continuous monitoring, and is efficient.

Currently, there are approximately 300 complaints per year about nuisance odors from industrial operations. These odors are assessed through sensory tests using human noses to determine odor concentrations, typically from industrial operations where odors are non-toxic to sniff safely. However, there are various types of industrial operations with odors that are hazardous to human health and cannot be assessed with human noses due to chemical components. Therefore, the E-Nose can be used to continuously monitor odor levels at all times 24 hours, reducing complaints and impacts on surrounding communities. This efficient approach improves fairness and promotes ongoing cooperation between SCGP and the Department of Industrial Works to enhance odor measurement standards and technical guidelines for future E-Nose usage.

“Ready to Share, Ready to Show”, Safe and convenient transportation packaging

SCGP Ready to Share, Ready to Show
Loading Data...

Safely shipping products out of factories or production sites to where they are sold is one of the top concerns of many entrepreneurs because if the product is damaged even slightly during the transportation period, it means that the value of the product will also decrease.

Therefore, choosing the packaging used for transporting goods well is something that will help entrepreneurs feel confident that their goods can smoothly transfer to their destination.

SCGP’s designers, Thanaporn Worawas and Kritchaporn Kulrattanarak, once designed quality transportation packaging. Such packaging also has other features than being something used for transporting goods.

Transportation packaging was created by SCGP designers at that time. It’s titled “Ready to Share, Ready to Show.”

Sure about transportation

“Ready to Share, Ready to Show” is a creation by SCGP designers in the form of paper packaging for transporting large bottles of chili sauce.

It is known as packaging specifically for transporting goods. Of course, the first obvious feature is that it can be used to pack extra-large bottles of chili sauce to safely transport them to various destinations. There is no damage to the goods during transportation by using standard dimensional packaging (Common Footprint) with special design, to make the packaging be strong, secure the product to the packaging, and not inaccurate to the point of damage.

SCGP designers have highlighted that they created this packaging. We are concerned about the safety of transportation. It is used exclusively for the transportation of goods.

If this packaging is used, then even a small amount of transportation errors have occurred, which will make them subject to criticism from customers.

“We focus primarily on the impact strength of the packaging.” SCGP designers discuss the most important highlight of the “Ready to Share, Ready to Show” packaging.

“We will make samples of the packaging for customers to test. We look at the process of transporting goods, from the customer’s warehouse to whether the customer uses our packaging to sort the goods, and whether is there any damage?”

“We have to make sure that our packaging can be used to transport goods safely. Otherwise, we can be criticized. If there is any area where we think there is a risk, we need to be 100 percent sure. To be able to send the workout.”

You have to think about a lot of things just in case. Simulate using packaging in every situation first so that there are no mistakes in every aspect.”

Convenient for all parties

Following its use in the field of transportation. The next highlight of “Ready to Share, Ready to Show” is that it is a packaging for transporting extra-large chili sauce bottles that customers can conveniently install and sell.

SCGP designers have revealed that they chose “SRP” or “Shelf Ready Packaging” as one of the key elements for the “Ready to Share, Ready to Show” packaging design.

“SRP” or “Shelf Ready Packaging” is a type of packaging designed to be conveniently placed on the shelf. It allows users to save steps. It also increases the market value of the product placed in “SRP”.

“We designed our existing Common Footprint to be Shelf Ready Packaging before coming out as Ready to Share, Ready to Show, where the structure of the packaging will be Common Footprint combined with Shelf Ready Packaging,” revealed SCGP designer.

“We take into account the frontline, whether it’s our end customer or those who come to shop at each point of sale, and it meets what customers want from us.”

“Customer’s staff can easily work without having to waste time on the placement of the products in our packaging, and the people who come to buy the product can see the product clearly and become interested in the product.”

Super Attraction

Another highlight of “Ready to Share, Ready to Show” is that it is a packaging that can help to highlight the product, and attract buyers’ eyes to pay attention to the product. It leads to great promotional opportunities.

The SCGP designer said, “Customers are focused on retailing. They have to put the product up for sale and have buyers pay attention to the product and buy it. Therefore, to make it easy for people to shop and pick up products, we are focusing on Shelf Ready Packaging.”

“We had to find a way to make our customers’ products stand out from other customers’ products, so we talked to the graphic design team to help them design the packaging to be different than the competition. How to make our packaging, can help promote customer brands, making it memorable for shoppers.”

Therefore, our work is not just a packaging for shipping goods.

With the 3 main highlights of “Ready to Share, Ready to Show” packaging, the work has been able to win the first prize in the Transport Package category at the “ASIASTAR 2022 AWARDS”.

“The fact that we design our work with the desire to meet a variety of needs but still have transportation as the main concern, so our work is quite tight in terms of quality and has attracted the attention of the judges,” said the SCGP designer about the award for “Ready to Share, Ready to Show”.

“I was impressed with the cooperation of all parties to help create this work. We have informed our customers that this work has won an award and they are happy with us.”

SCGP announced its operating results for 2023, reporting a revenue from sales of Baht 129,398 million and a profit for the year of Baht 5,248 million. This achievement was attributed to the enhanced cost management efficiency and the strengthened network of recovered paper sources. SCGP highlighted a positive trend in packaging industry for 2024, driven by a boost in tourism and rebound in exports while inflation rates and interest rates are projected to decline. Laying out its plan for 2024 with strategic approach to drive revenue and profit, setting sales target of Baht 150,000 million.

Wichan Jitpukdee, Chief Executive Officer of SCG Packaging Public Company Limited or SCGP, disclosed the company’s operating results for 2023. The revenue from sales amounted to Baht 129,398 million, a decrease of 11% YoY. EBITDA stood at Baht 17,769 million, decreased 8% YoY, and the profit for the year was Baht 5,248 million, down by 10% YoY. However, EBITDA margin increased to 14% from 13% in the previous year, reflecting the focused efforts on cost management and production efficiency improvements. Sales of consumer packaging remained strong while price competition intensified in overall packaging paper industry over the past year amid high inflation and interest rates which impacted consumer purchasing power. Nonetheless, selling prices of packaging paper and pulp in the region have already passed the bottom point and are trending upward, driven by recovering demand in ASEAN and China.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, SCGP reported revenue from sales of Baht 31,881 million, a decrease of 5% YoY but an increase of 1% QoQ. EBITDA was Baht 4,388 million, up by 23% YoY and increased by 4% QoQ. The profit for the period was Baht 1,218 million, an increase of 171% YoY but a decrease of 8% from last quarter. QoQ change in net profit was attributed to increased taxes and finance costs. The increase in EBITDA and profit from last year was driven by increased sales volumes across nearly all product groups, and enhanced cost management efficiency. These cost management strategies include the use of technology in the production process of packaging paper plants in Thailand, a comprehensive network of recovered paper sources that helps mitigate price impact and increase the stability of raw material supply, along with an increased proportion of biomass energy usage.

During the fourth quarter of 2023, packaging industry continued to recover, especially in food and beverage sectors and consumer products, which benefited from increased spending during New Year’s festivities and rising tourism activities. Notable recoveries of domestic consumption were in Vietnam and Indonesia, with exports, particularly of frozen food and pet food, showing good recovery. However, durable goods remained stable.

In consideration of the FY2023 financial performance, the Board of Directors has proposed for shareholder approval at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), a full year 2023 annual dividend payment of 0.55 Baht per share, of which 0.25 Baht per share was previously paid as an interim dividend on 22 August 2023. The final dividend payment of 0.30 Baht per share will be on 22 April 2024, record date of 3 April 2024, and XD-date of 2 April 2024.

Wichan said that the overall packaging industry is expected to continue its recovery in 2024, especially in ASEAN countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and also in China. Positive factors contributing to this recovery consist of stimulus policies including in tourism and an anticipated export rebound. A downward trend in inflation rates and interest rates is expected to positively impact consumer purchasing power. Meanwhile, energy and recycled paper prices are trending toward sideway up, with potential adjustments in global freight costs from ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East.

SCGP is ready to drive growth to achieve its 2024 revenue target of Baht 150,000 million, with investment budget of Baht 15,000 million. This growth will be fueled by strategies to expand the business in high-potential sectors including medical supplies and labware, global foodservice packaging, and bio-solutions, which is a megatrend. SCGP is committed to continuous developing innovation and solutions to enhance business capabilities, proactively manage costs, and elevate operational excellence through the use of technology. Moreover, ESG initiatives are in progress with the continual increase in alternative energy sources which helps move SCGP towards achieving its goal of Net Zero by 2050.
